Wellness Education Advisor Recognized with National Peer Education Award

For her success in engaging student groups to promote awareness of sexual violence at UB, Anna Sotelo-Peryea from UB's Wellness Education Services was named one of only five national Outstanding Advisors by the Bacchus Network. In addition, the UB Men's Group was named an Outstanding Affiliate.

The Bacchus Network is group of 30,000 college student leaders and eight million peer educators on 900 worldwide campuses who work together to create healthier and safer college campuses. Student leaders and peer educators work together to share ideas and design health promotions on such topics as violence prevention, alcohol abuse, marijuana, tobacco control, fitness and nutrition, and mental health.

Anna Sotelo-Peryea was selected on the merits of her work as a peer advisor to UB's Men's Group. The Men's Group is a rape and sexual assault prevention education program, run by students and mentored by Wellness Education Services, that provides training and awareness raising events with a focus on cultivating men as allies in preventing sexual violence.

"Anna is a tireless advocate for all students and is dedicated to ending sexual violence through peer education," said Sherri Darrow, PhD, Director of UB's Wellness Education Services. "She has a unique ability to transfer her passion for the cause to students. Our students have grown to respect her immensely for her commitment and leadership. She truly deserves this recognition."

With the funds raised from the sale of the refurbished phones, Verizon Wireless will purchase wireless phones and donate airtime to victims of domestic violence through human services and law enforcement agencies.
