Parking and Transportation Services

Disability Transportation & Parking Services

Parking for persons with disabilities is available at various locations throughout both campuses, along Putnam Way (North Campus) and most prominently in the Diefendorf Lot (South Campus).

While attending a meeting or event in Slee Concert Hall, Center for the Arts, Alumni Arena, or the Stadium, disability parking can be found in Slee B and Baird B Lots as well as Alumni A and Arena Lots behind Alumni Arena unless otherwise signed for an event.

While attending a meeting or event in the Student Union, Knox Lecture Hall, Capen Hall or other buildings along the spine of North Campus, disability parking can be found along Putnam Way unless otherwise signed for an event.

Only vehicles having license plates for persons with disabilities, permits issued by a state municipality for persons with disabilities (displayed on the visor, rearview mirror or dashboard) or temporary permits for persons with disabilities (issued through Accessibility Resources, 25 Capen Hall, 716-645-2608), may utilize designated areas. During some events you may be asked by parking enforcement staff to show your permit when entering reserved disability parking.

Transportation Service Policy For Students With Disabilities

Parking and Transportation Services, in conjunction with Accessibility Resources, schedules shuttle service for students with disabilities. The service is designed to fulfill their on-campus travel needs. A synergistic degree of cooperation between the student, Parking and Transportation, the vehicle operators, the teaching staff, and Accessibility Resources, is required to maximize the efficiency of this service.

Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) is required to operate in accordance with guidelines of SUNY and New York State regulations. The service is not allowed to make off-campus pick-ups or deliveries. The below listed policy is currently utilized in efforts to provide the most efficient service possible.

  1. Each student is asked to submit a list of pick-up/drop-off times and locations. Ideally, the schedule should be communicated to PTS soon after the student has confirmed his/her course schedule.
  2. Subsequent to review of the schedule, PTS will inform the student of feasible pick-up/drop-off times. In instances of conflicting requests the student will be provided with the next available time-slot. While rarely an issue, efforts are made to prioritize service for academic purposes ahead of other service requests.
  3. Students are asked to notify PTS if/when their need for shuttle service decreases or increases. To be sure the request can be met, twenty-four hour notice is required for additional service. Students are free to call the shuttle driver to request additional service changes with less than a twenty-four hour notice. If the driver can accommodate the request within their schedule, it will be fulfilled. Drivers will make every effort to accommodate changes and may have to suggest alternative solutions to the request if they are previously scheduled to serve other customers.
  4. With the exception of mall/market transportation, PTS cannot transport students to off-campus sites. In the event that an instructor schedules a class at an off campus location the student will be responsible for being transported there.
  5. Students are required to appear at the designated pick-up location. Drivers are not required to call rooms or look for students inside buildings.
  6. Pick-up locations are required to be on-campus sites. This provides students with a safe shelter, as well as access to telephones in case of a need to communicate with either office while waiting for transportation.
  7. Once the shuttle schedule is established the student is expected to appear on time at the pick-up location. Drivers are asked to depart if the student is not at the pick-up location within (5) five minutes of the scheduled time. This is particularly adhered to if another student is waiting for service. Being late for pick-ups disrupts service for others. Please make every attempt to be on time.
  8. Out of courtesy, students are asked to provide advance notice to PTS and/or the driver if a pick-up is to be cancelled or delayed. If a pick-up is missed without notice it is the students responsibility to inform PTS of his/her need for additional service that day.
  9. The current hours of operation for the university’s paratransit shuttle service are 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
  10. Mall/Market Transportation will be provided in a similar range of hours as service provided to all UB students. The service currently operates Wednesdays (4 p.m. - 9 p.m.) and Saturdays (8 a.m. - 4 p.m.) of the fall/spring semesters. Students may schedule in advance, or contact the driver on cell phone as needed.
  11. An area transportation provider will fulfill transportation requests that fall outside of the standard hours of the PTS motor vehicle operator staff or when an unexpected occurrence happens. The current provider is All-American Wheelchair Transportation, Inc. Their transportation fleet is maintained at 6597 South Transit Road in the City of Lockport. They may be reached at 716-625-8400. Students should contact their dispatcher and advise them of desired pick-up/drop-off areas and times. In efforts to ensure timeliness and facilitate scheduling, All-American has requested advance notice for weekend requests. Students should make every effort to contact All-American no later than 10pm on Fridays. Requests made without twenty-four (24) hours notice may be subject to delays, but they will accommodate.

This policy serves to ensure safe and timely inter- and intra-campus transportation for UB students with disabilities. Effective and timely communication between all parties will increase the efficiency of the transportation service. Please make use of the below listed phone numbers in arranging and utilizing the service.
